Salzburg, Austria: Exploring the breweries

The first commercial brewery in Salzburg was established in the late 14th century. The two oldest traditional breweries still stand today, and their ancient secret recipes and unparalleled brewing techniques are their hallmarks: Stiegl Brewery's history can be traced back to 1492 and today it is the largest privately owned brewery in Austria, while Augustiner Bräu Kloster Mülln Brewery has been producing beer since 1621.

Stiegl Brewery

Since the brewery was founded in 1492, the unique Stiegl-Märzen has always been a popular drink and an integral part of Salzburg's beer culture. Initially brewed in the center of Salzburg, their classic bottling plant for hops was moved to the Maxglan district of Salzburg at the end of the 19th century. The brewery continues to be located there and has been privately owned by the Kiener family for over 120 years.

Augustiner Brauerei

Located in Mülln, Salzburg, Augustiner Brauerei was founded in 1621 by Augustinian monks. To this day, the beer is still brewed according to traditional recipes, mostly by hand. At the brewery, only the finest ingredients are used, without relying on preservatives, and it adheres to the strict standards set by the so-called 'Purity Law'. The brewing process at Augustiner Bräu is characterized by the open cooling of the wort in Austria's last traditional cooling vessel and open fermentation.
The Salzburg brewery 'Die Weisse' is Austria's oldest Weissbier brewer. Since 1901, wheat beer has been brewed in the Schallmoos district of Salzburg with innovative methods and the highest quality standards.
Brauhaus Gusswerk in Hof bei Salzburg is the organic beer specialist of Mozart's city. Since its establishment in 2006, Salzburg brewmaster Reinhold Barta has been committed to using sustainable ingredients and biodynamic brewing methods, in accordance with Demeter guidelines.
In the 'Trumer world' located in Obertrum near Salzburg, visitors can experience a new beer culture firsthand. Opportunities include beer sommelier tastings and brewing your own beer at 'Kiesbye's BIERkulturHAUS,' as well as tours of ancient beer cellars. HofbräuKaltenhausen

As the oldest brewery in Salzburg, since 1475, Hofbräu located in Kaltenhausen has combined traditional beer recipes with ingenious creativity and innovative brewing art.
