8 great retro-chic and trendy bars in Beijing

How to spend nightlife? How about going to some unique and elegant bars? I recommend a few places that combine retro and trend, definitely worth a visit.

GANLU MANNA

Full of girlish sentiment, the bartender mixes cocktails based on the selected picture. If any bar can be said to be full of girlish sentiment, GANLU MANNA is definitely one of the top ones. Located in a high-rise building in Sanlitun, this bar already exudes a touch of mystery with its deer theme. The hand-drawn illustrations inside the bar evoke the flying apsaras of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, fully displaying a fairy-like girlish charm. There is no conventional menu here; instead, it is replaced by storybooks and picture albums. The bartender will mix cocktails based on the picture you choose, and each drink is accompanied by flowers and lights, creating a dreamy and dazzling visual experience.
Under the Lianbao Apartment in Sanlitun, the 'Highway Store' with a red signboard has opened. The sign above the door reads 'Pinball Machine. Liquor Convenience,' indicating that the main products offered in the store are liquor and pinball machines. In a small room on the first floor, there are pinball machines representing different pop cultures and themes, including: The Walking Dead, AC/DC band, Superman, Batman, and one of the 50 Kiss band machines available worldwide is quietly placed here. The second floor is a proper bar, divided into two spaces: one side has a large enclosed bay window, and the other side has a full wall of automatic liquor vending machines. You can buy liquor on the second floor and come down to play pinball, experiencing the childhood addiction you never fully satisfied.

Róng Bar

Róng Bar's facade is not large and can even be easily overlooked. As soon as you enter, there is a staircase resembling a castle passageway. Upon reaching the second floor, you will find a hidden gem. You can smell the pleasant incense that immediately boosts your mood. In front of you is a spacious bar, cozy small tables, and private sofas. The drink menu includes not only regular wines and spirits but also highly recommended cocktails. If you can't handle strong drinks or just want to sip a little, the cocktails here will not disappoint you. There is also a terrace upstairs, where you can sit when the weather is nice. On a summer night, sipping a drink while enjoying the breeze is so pleasant that you won't want to leave.

Janes and Hooch

The facade of Janes and Hooch is so understated that it almost seems intentionally hard to find. The dark wooden door disappears into the night, with only the sign quietly glowing, but this doesn't stop Janes and Hooch from being renowned in Beijing's cocktail bar scene. The owner from Australia, Warren Pang, who is also a star in the bartending world, brings the warmth of Melbourne to the bar's decor and interior atmosphere, blending it with the cool and unique style of the American Prohibition era. The aim is to pursue simple and classic cocktails and a comfortable atmosphere. The bar stands out for its bourbon whiskey and rum. You can choose to sit on a high stool on the first floor to chat with the bartenders or gather with friends on the low sofas on the second floor. The place attracts tasteful patrons from Beijing, giving a sense of being abroad.

HOPERISE

HOPER is a bungalow hidden in the yard. While preserving the original layout of the building, only decorations were made without any modifications. A skylight was added just enough to see the moon, and curtains were used to create private spaces. The lantern hanging at the pivot of the space is our symbol, representing the collision of traditional Chinese style and Western culture. Besides the English name, it also has its own Chinese name [Nian]. All the drinks are updated seasonally, with the menu changing according to spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Each seasonal special uses seasonal ingredients and incorporates traditional Chinese culture, such as hot yellow wine in winter and jasmine tea in spring.

The Moth to the Flame

Inside the store, a huge 'The Moth to the Flame' plaque is located directly above the wine cabinet, and on the opposite wall is a comic of 'The Moth to the Flame'. This is the main style of The Black Moth. Numerous finished and draft comics are framed on the walls and corridors around the store. Countless KAWS figures and companions, as well as the well-known 'Fork Eye' Original Fake, are hidden throughout the space in various forms. As a handcrafted cocktail bar, the room next to the bar counter serves as a warehouse and kitchen, equipped with a variety of distillation, extraction, and clarification equipment. Through secondary processing, the bartender infuses various familiar flavors into the drinks in different ways.

V Plus Lounge

This place seems more suitable for days with good weather because you can overlook the beautiful scenery of Beijing from the rooftop terrace. You might even encounter a top-notch bartender specially invited to make you a special cocktail. If you feel a bit cold, the considerate waiter will promptly bring you a blanket.

Container Terrace Bar

Terrace bars are not a novelty in Sanlitun, but they are hard to find in the Wangjing area. Finally, there is a terrace bar in Wangjing. CONTAINER TOP LOUNGE is located on the 3rd floor of Kirin New World in Wangjing, directly overlooking the Wangjing landmark, Wangjing SOHO. The entire terrace bar covers 450 square meters and is decorated in a Nordic minimalist style. There is a wide selection of drinks available here, including champagne, beer, whiskey, and cocktails freshly mixed by bartenders. In addition to fine wines, CONTAINER TOP LOUNGE offers good food, which is something that most bars lack.
