I heard that the staff at those car rental companies always push hard to sell insurance. Should we just buy the insurance in advance and then just say no no no when the time comes ?

The shop assistant will recommend additional insurance, which you can ignore if you are confident in your driving skills. However, the roads in Australia are really narrow and left-hand drive, so you must be careful to look for oncoming traffic from the left when making a right turn.

When renting a car, the staff will generally ask if you want to buy insurance. We think that whether to buy insurance should be based on the difficulty of the Road trip route, not just to save money. For example, when we drove near Melbourne, we didn't buy insurance because we expected to be on good highways. But for the second leg of the trip, we rented a car to go to Tasmania Island and also had to go to Cradle Mountain. We expected the journey to be bumpy and mountainous, so we bought insurance. Although it cost 25 Australian dollars per day, buying it for 5 days cost more than 600 yuan per person, which is about 150 yuan per person. It's still worth it compared to the starting claim amount of 2900 dollars, and it's also more reassuring.

If you are renting a car for the first time, be sure to carefully read the English rental agreement of the car rental company. If you don't understand something, be sure to ask. Don't be afraid of the staff being impatient or having language barriers.

When starting a right-hand drive car, you still need to drive slowly to adapt. The car dealer will suggest you to buy insurance and pay for the tolls, but this is optional.
