How do you know you have arrived at the Austrian border? Are there signs or does the gas station have the Austrian flag ?

I haven't tried it before. You should always look at the map to know.
In general, Google Navigation can estimate the distance.
I was walking on the night road, already off the highway from Switzerland, and entering Austria on the ground. I didn't see the national flag or the EU flag, just a small office in the middle of the road. The police officer was holding a stick and gestured for the car in front to stop. I saw it from behind and pulled over to ask where to buy a ticket. He told me it was just ahead. After driving a few hundred meters, there was another police officer in the same small office. I continued to ask, and he indicated that I could see a gas station by turning right at the traffic lights ahead, and then I bought a ticket with euros. This kind of duty is considered a border.
Saw the EU sign on the side of the road, that's the border.
The national flag on the outer side of the expressway has changed.
