I just drove all the way from Seattle to Los Angeles, and in my opinion, the coastal scenery of Washington and Oregon is much better than Highway 1. Especially the stretch from Astoria to Brookings, the scenery is particularly magnificent. It's worth stopping for a night at a seaside motel to enjoy the ocean view, but avoid Fridays as there are usually no rooms available. For travelers entering California, it's important to carry valuable items and documents with you as there have been frequent car break-ins. If only property is lost, it will be much easier to handle.
