The car rental company only looked at my translation, they didn't check my domestic driver's license at all.

It should be fine. When I picked up the car in Vienna, I had all my documents, but my wife only brought the translation and forgot her driver's license. However, we registered as two drivers, and after negotiating with the staff, we were able to pick up the car.
