Usually Melbourne to the Twelve Apostles takes the Great Ocean Road, and on the way back takes the inland highway, which is faster than the Great Ocean Road and easier to drive. You can check Google Maps for specific details. I went from Melbourne to Adelaide via the Great Ocean Road, and then took the inland highway back to Melbourne.
