It seems that if we don't leave now, the New Zealand government website says that the road will be open on December 15th. Who knows? The foreigners are slow in doing things.

Please note that there is still a lot of work to be done on State Highway 1 and several locations will still be under construction. You should be prepared for unsealed sections of road, some lanes closed, slow speed limits and "stop/go" signs, all of which may cause delays. From 15 December 2017, State Highway 1 was finally reopened to daytime traffic. This meant the whole of SH1 between Picton and Christchurch was now open. When SH1 reopened, it was expected that the journey time between Picton and Christchurch would be at least 5.5 hours.

I checked and it seems like the road is impassable due to damage caused by the earthquake. We were also considering this route for tomorrow.
