Excuse me, is it cold in the mid and late April in the South Island? Do I need to bring a down jacket? ?

You need at least thin ones. I went to New Zealand for 17 days in mid February this year, except Christchurch and Auckland, it felt like summer. Other small towns were very cold. You can wear windproof jackets and sweaters.

At the very least, bring a superlight down jacket or a windbreaker.
