I applied for a refund 10 days after the flight took off. I originally thought there was no hope, but it was all refunded. I applied for a refund several days in advance for Melbourne to Shanghai, and for Sydney to Melbourne with Jetstar, and they were all fully refunded!

Can be cancelled at any time, but how much can be refunded after the plane takes off depends on waiting, and there may only be a fraction refunded.
