I want to go to Lake Tekapo for New Year's Eve, but I can't book a hotel. I can only stay in Omarama, 80 kilometers away. I plan to see the stars first and then go. How is it to drive at night in the South Island ?

The mountain roads are not wide and winding, and it's not easy to drive at night. It takes more than an hour to drive 80 kilometers.
As last year, remember to buy a lot of food at the supermarket, otherwise you can only eat McDonald's and KFC.
Several years ago, I drove a lot on the night road in New Zealand. There's nothing wrong with night roads themselves, but be careful not to drive when you're too tired. Also, small animals tend to come out at night, so don't go too fast.
It is suggested to stay in Tewzier or Furlie. The journey can be shortened by half.
