When renting a car, the car rental company will explain whether it can provide additional driver slots. There is no emphasis on whether they are a couple. It is only about whether to increase or add more people, and there is no mention of the relationship between the person requesting an additional driver slot and you.

That is to say, if you are not a couple and want to be a driver, you will be counted as an additional driver and may need to pay extra fees. Couples do not need to pay extra fees for additional drivers.
