But if you drive to Christchurch in a straight line for about four or five hours, why bother to be so tired? There is a place called Oamaru in the middle, where you can stop and visit a white stone town. In addition, there are Moeraki Boulders between Dunedin and Oamaru, all of which can be passed along the way.
