Hawaii's ancient culture is Polynesian culture. Well-known symbols of Hawaii like hula dance and Aloha are part of Polynesian culture. The best place to experience the culture is at the Polynesian Cultural Center in northern Oahu. Starting at noon, seven cultural villages showcase various performances, immersing visitors in a warm, lively cultural atmosphere. We learned Fijian, danced hula, learned to rhythmically beat bamboo sticks, learned indigenous cooking methods, watched the making of a traditional Hawaiian luau, rode Hawaiian canoes, and witnessed a traditional Hawaiian wedding...an afternoon of visual feast unfolded, followed by a buffet featuring roasted pig and a grand cultural show called "HA Breath of the Life" in the evening, immersing in awe of life and admiration for love, reveling in the fervor of the dance performance, experiencing the essence of love and life.

The former Hawaii was not part of the United States; it was the Kingdom of Hawaii. The best record of this history is at Iolani Palace. The palace was built by King Kalakaua in 1881 and was the residence of his sister, the last reigning monarch of Hawaii. Iolani Palace was the royal residence during the time of the Kingdom of Hawaii and was reopened to the public as a museum in the 1970s. Originally an independent kingdom, Hawaii was overthrown by American residents in 1894, leading to the establishment of the Republic of Hawaii.
