Are there speed cameras on the road? Or are fines issued on the spot? Just passed through a small town and was asked to pay 50, there was a speed camera and I was going about 75 when I passed it. Will they send the fine to the rental car company later ?

There are speed cameras in small towns with a speed limit of 50. You will receive a fine of 20-30 NZD by post.
No speed cameras, but police cars often hide on the side of the road. They chase you as soon as you speed up.
On the way back to Queenstown from Te Anau today, a Mitsubishi SUV overtook my car at around 120km/h within 100km/h. As a result, in less than 15 minutes, I caught up with him on the side of the road: the police car stopped him.
