Can anyone who has just been to Vatican tell me if they need to show the original passport at the entrance for customs inspection? Can backpacks, food and bottled water be taken in? Thank you ?

If you have a skip the line ticket, you might need a passport. Not much water and small snacks are allowed. The security is not as strict as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the United States. Water and food are not allowed to be brought in.
It is said that the Vatican Museum does not allow backpacks.
You can bring bottled water into Vatican City, and you can bring it into any museum. I haven't tried bringing food in, but there are food options available within Vatican City.
Water and food are both okay, why do we need a passport?
