It's self-service, you can fuel at will (suitable for filling up) by credit card or savings card on the spot. If the card is not easily recognized (which often happens), you can only go to the counter (convenience store at the gas station) to pay first and then refuel. The United States is very large, and every time you go somewhere it's different.
