The police won't intervene in this kind of thing. It's an insurance issue. If something happens, the insurance will not pay.

This is mainly not a question of whether or not to check, but a question of whether insurance will recognize it in case of an accident. Illegal drivers will cause all insurance to be invalid.

If you get caught, it's over. Why bother? It's just a 25 euro thing.
