The hotels in Teanau all have maps of the local Milford tour routes, all with a unified numbering system. The map clearly marks several highly recommended spots on that route, the most famous of which is Mirror Lake, although it feels average and all the tour buses stop there. The other two spots I mentioned might take a little longer to visit, so not many buses will stop there. I suggest visiting them on the way back, so you don't have to worry about missing the boat in the fjord.
