Generally it requires the driver to be the primary driver, but in my last experience: I was the contact person, but the driver was someone else, and as a result, they used my credit card since we were traveling together.

The terms require the driver's credit card, but in the end we did not use the driver's credit card in Norway and Iceland, and it seemed to be no big problem.
