We flew from Oahu to the Big Island on Hawaiian Airlines on the 4th. They originally said that luggage wasn't free. But when we checked in, they didn't charge us, and a staff member helped us check in. After checking in, I asked him if we needed to pay for luggage. He said no. I booked the ticket through Tuniu. I remember looking it up online and luggage wasn't free. I'm confused...

Because you fly directly from Honolulu airport where you just arrived, so it's free, but it will be charged for the return flight! Honolulu to all the islands are small planes, so luggage must be checked. However, if you fly directly from Honolulu after getting off the plane and continue to fly to the Big Island, luggage check is free, but it will be charged for the return flight.
