If you don't use the payment box at the car rental, is there a risk of being photographed after accidentally entering a toll road and then facing the embarrassment of complicated procedures and unable to pay? ... If you avoid toll roads all the way, will it be okay ?

We mistakenly took the toll road from Los Angeles to San Diego and then received the daily fees and service fees for the box. It is recommended to rent directly or set up Google to avoid toll roads.

You're so indecisive, just buy it and have a worry-free trip. I bought one for myself too, haha. Carpooling is usually free, but some may charge a fee. However, carpooling drives too fast. I rented mine from SIXT without a box, just waiting to take a picture of the license plate, and then they handle the payment. It's not 'they say', it's a daily deduction.

The charging box itself does not charge money, and it is usually on the car. It charges money when it is used. It is suggested not to use it, because it will charge the entire rental period when it is used, which is a painful lesson.

There are basically no toll roads in the United States West. However, if you are really concerned about it, you can choose one.
