For about 3 hours drive, return the car before 16:30 at the airport, and leave before 13:30. Actually, you should visit the downtown of Melbourne one day in advance, first far and then near, and put the nearby ones at the end. There is no pressure at all to go to the airport from Melbourne. Most people seem to like to go to the nearby ones first, and then run further, and the distant ones at the end seem to be like a raid.
