Only a few use chip cards. If it's just a magnetic stripe card, there's no problem with fuel. The biggest problem is just to go to another gas station. But when it comes to hotels and car rental companies that only use chip cards, the trouble is huge. Today is the second day I'm in Switzerland. The hotels where I rent a car all swipe the magnetic stripe credit card. I haven't used my backup chip card yet. I picked up the car at Zurich Airport. The car rental company is Alamo. It uses a magnetic stripe card.

For safety, use a chip card. Some machines won't recognize magnetic stripe cards. If you only have a magnetic stripe card, bring some extra cash as a precaution.

It is recommended to use chip cards for security. My friend's magnetic stripe card was stolen and used twice, and it was very troublesome to file a complaint and track with the bank.
