Some people say that you have to go to the Italian consulate to get your driver's license authenticated before you can feel at ease. There are too many opinions, some of which are outdated and have expired. I just want to hear a feedback from friends in France or Italy in 2017. I am at your mercy ?

If you're really worried, go get a notarized copy of your driver's license.
Don't need. We drove by using credentials and domestic driver's license in Italy last year. Of course, we didn't get stopped by the police all the way.
