Ha ha ha I drove directly from LA to Las Vegas and then ate and drank a lot. I'm not really sure what was on the road.

I will also take this route next year. I checked and found that Barstow, Beek, and Jean are three stops along the way. There isn't much in Beek, just a main road with probably only places to eat. Prices by the lake might be higher (if available). In Jean, you can see Sheep Mountain and there is a casino hotel, with prices probably being more affordable. Just don't spend too much on the slot machines! In Barstow, there is a supermarket, Beek has a lake view, and the casino hotel usually offers budget accommodations.

The United States is very large, and every time you go somewhere it's different. This summer, I went to Yellowstone and chose an SUV, but I regretted it because the high center of gravity made it tilt heavily on the mountain roads... and all the roads were paved, so if you don't have a need for a lot of luggage, don't choose an SUV.
