Is India stable and safe recently ?

I feel that India is still safe. We have gone from Delhi to Jaipur to Agra to Varanasi, and we just arrived in Mumbai today, which is also our first trip to India. Before coming here, we had various experiences and feelings from people around us or on the Internet about traveling in India. After coming here, I feel that some of them are not exaggerated. Of course, sometimes it is easy to be taken in and deceived, so we must be cautious.

Can I rent a car and drive it myself in India with an international driving license certification? Thank you
