Google Maps will mostly take you the bumpy shortcut. Ignore the navigation when it tells you to turn right onto route 1. Take the longer route, but the road conditions are better and it takes about the same amount of time. Horse Mountain is the place I think is least worth visiting. You drive so far and when you get there, you will be very disappointed. Sure. If you only have two days, it is a bit rushed to go back to Reykjavik. I also only had two days left at that time. I stayed by the Mývatn Lake for one night, and had to give up Akureyri for the other night, otherwise I would have driven too long on the last day.
