Are friends in the south island who are leaving tonight supposed to wear thick down jackets or just normal coats ?

You don't need to wear thick, thin or windbreaker clothes. I caught the rain and snow on Mt. Cook today, only wearing a windbreaker and I didn't feel cold.

You definitely need to bring down jacket. The weather is very changeable these days and it will get colder. It will be even colder with strong wind and heavy rain.

Not cold. Wore short-sleeved T-shirt, cashmere coat and single pants today in Christchurch. I don't feel cold. May be because I don't walk outside much.

Autumn and winter are here, yet you are not wearing a down jacket. You must be planning to buy a new one in New Zealand.

Today in Hokitika, I passed by Arthur Pass and got off the car to have a look at the scenery. I'm kind of afraid of cold, so I wore a thermal underwear, a sweater and a fleece jacket, a UNIQLO thermal tights and a autumn sports pants. I also brought a hat in case of wind. It's pretty cold outside at night.

I think you'd better check the local weather forecast, as everyone's perception of cold is different. I once asked in a group what clothes to bring, and someone said to wear a down jacket. However, I ended up not wearing it at all and just wore a hoodie and a t-shirt every day. Even on the Cook Mountain Trail, I only wore a t-shirt. The coldest was in Queenstown when it rained, but I still only wore a hoodie and a spring/summer jacket. Many locals wear a down jacket on the upper body and shorts on the lower body.

No, it hasn't rained recently, just the wind is particularly strong.
