I rented from AVIS in Italy, provided their own translation, original driver's license, and passport was fine. There was a small episode where I encountered four or five people claiming to be police in La Spezia, surrounding the car, looking very intimidating, and felt nothing like police. At that time, I was just checking out at the hotel and packing my luggage. I hurried into the hotel lobby to call the Italian guy at the front desk for help, and after some communication, it turned out they were indeed plainclothes police, and all I had to do was show them the hotel bill, and that was it. They didn't even ask for my driver's license; I had no idea what they wanted to check. I was quite scared at that moment.
