Today, when we returned the car to Sixt in Salzburg, we asked the gas station attendant which level of car wash was needed when returning the car. He told us that the package of 6.99 euros was enough. When we arrived at Sixt, it was already after 12 o'clock and the staff had gone home. We had arrived 10 minutes early to greet the staff, but they said that they would not accept the car if it was late, and that they would collect it the next day. Actually, returning the car in person is also useless. Last Thursday noon, I returned the car in person in Vienna and repeatedly requested a face-to-face check. The staff did not check and said they would wait for the email. Now I still don't know how the inspection results are, and my heart is not at ease at all.
I just did a simple cleaning with a bucket and brush next to the gas station before returning the car, for free. As long as the appearance doesn't affect the inspection, it's okay to return the car without being too clean. The interior of the car should not be too dirty, and there will be a cleaning fee if there are traces of drinks or food, or if there has been vomiting in the car. In fact, all cars need to be cleaned inside and out before they can be rented out again, so there's no need to be too nervous about this.
I also chose that package, only to find out that it was machine wash, without manual wiping. Europe is really expensive in all kinds of ways.
