I don't know what car model you booked or where you booked it, so I can't answer you. I booked a manual Golf at the Avis airport store in Stuttgart. When I picked it up, they gave me an Audi A3 automatic with only 17 kilometers on it. I was naturally very happy. So, it's all about luck. If you're unlucky and the car you get isn't what you booked, you can only try to negotiate with the rental company. If there really isn't a suitable car available, you may just have to accept it.
