We also went from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca on the expressway. We bought a card. However, I saw some travel guides saying that we didn't need to buy a card and that the one on the left was cash. We didn't buy it at the gas station. We bought it at the expressway toll station. They also have an express lane for ETC, and the one on the left is for collecting money.
