In general, there are many ferry schedules for short distances, so you don't need to buy them in advance. Just wait in line and get on board on a first-come, first-served basis. As long as you don't miss the last ferry, you'll be fine. There are only two ferry routes that are relatively far, and I only took the one from Bodø to the Lofoten Islands. This ferry route has fewer schedules, especially for entering the island, so it's best to book in advance. The positions on the ferry are arranged by the guidance staff. They will reasonably arrange the positions so that the most vehicles can be loaded at once.
