She just emphasized that I didn't need to make any payments, but asked me to sign. I wondered if the insurance company was playing some kind of trick ?

Which car rental company? Which insurance? (Which domestic insurance requires a deposit?)

Chinese car dealers may have a vested interest with insurance companies, such as earning commission from selling insurance and benefiting from minor damages leading to major repairs. It's their business. The car dealer pressured me to sign the agreement, and I had no choice. My car was indeed hit by a small stone from the opposite side, leaving a small chip on the front window. The car dealer initially suggested repairing it instead of replacing the window, but in the end, they replaced it, which was more expensive, especially because the proximity sensor was on the front window. They asked for around $1200 NZD in compensation. I didn't have any insurance. Would I pay out of my own pocket? No.
