Introduction

The Manhattan Bridge is a suspension bridge that spans the East River in New York City, connecting the Manhattan and Brooklyn boroughs. The bridge was designed and built by Polish-American engineer Ralph Modjeski, while the cables were designed by designer Leon Moisseiff. Moisseiff later designed the collapsed Tacoma Narrows Bridge in 1940. The Manhattan Bridge has two levels of roadway, with the upper level consisting of a two-way 4-lane road, and the lower level consisting of a two-way convertible 3-lane road, 4 subway lines, pedestrian and bike paths. At peak times, the three lanes on the lower level can all be used for one-way traffic, or divided into two lanes going in opposite directions and one lane. There was a time when New York State Route 27 passed over the Manhattan Bridge, and in the future, Interstate 478 is planned to run on the bridge. Currently, there are no plans to charge tolls on the Manhattan Bridge, although tolls were once considered to fund maintenance costs, they were ultimately rejected.
