Introduction

Broadway Tower, a historic tower built in 1798, is the second highest point (at 312 meters above sea level) in the Cotswolds area. It is said that standing at the top of the tower, one can see the views of 16 counties within a radius of 62 miles (approximately 100 kilometers). The tower was designed by renowned architect James Wyatt, and features a mix of elements including a turret, battlements, gargoyles, and terraces. Its image has been widely used in various publications, making it quite well-known. It is considered a must-see attraction in the Cotswolds, often used as a starting point for tours or hiking trips. Behind Broadway Tower lies an interesting story. It is said that the tower was built simply because the wife of King Henry VI of England was a curious aristocrat and member of the Conservative party. She wanted to see if she could spot the fires on the hill from her residence, which was 22 miles (about 35 kilometers) away. She funded the remaining construction costs, and by the time the tower was completed, the lady discovered that her speculation was correct, as she was able to see the tower's lookout from her home.
