Introduction

Fountains Abbey is one of the largest and best-preserved Cistercian monasteries in the West, dating back to the 12th century. It had a history of over 400 years before Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries, and was one of the wealthiest institutions in Europe. Because of its fascinating history, Fountains Abbey has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
