Introduction

The National Monument, located on the top of Carlton Hill in Edinburgh, Scotland, was built to commemorate the soldiers who died fighting for Scotland in the Napoleonic Wars. Its designers were Charles Robert Cockerell and his collaborator William Henry Playfair, who took inspiration from the Parthenon in Athens. However, when construction of the National Monument began in 1826, only part of the project was completed.
