Introduction

The Genoa Aquarium is the second-largest aquarium in Europe. Built for the 1992 World Expo, it is a center for education, research, and culture. The aquarium covers 10,000 square meters and has 71 large aquariums holding 4 million liters of seawater. It houses over 600 species of sea creatures from around the globe, including sharks, seals, and penguins. The aquarium attempts to recreate real marine environments such as the South Pole, the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, the Amazon River, and the Indian Ocean. The Caribbean coral reef is particularly distinctive. Two architects, Renzo Piano and Peter Chermayeff, designed the aquarium to resemble neatly arranged shipping containers on a ship. A 100-meter long ship was built behind the aquarium in 1998 and connected to it, featuring virtual aquariums on its walls. Visitors here can hear the sound of huge waves and take a ride on a large island floating ship through the Amazon jungle. From May to June every year, the aquarium also organizes whale-watching trips, and nighttime exploring activities for children. As one of the world's most important aquariums, the Genoa Aquarium is definitely worth a visit.
