Introduction

In 1760, Carlos III built an astounding Christian church on the site of the former San Francisco convent. It is said that the convent had existed since 1217. The church has a dome with a diameter of 108 feet, the largest of all churches in Spain and even larger than St. Paul's Cathedral in London. The seven doors of the church are decorated with walnut carvings by Casas Juan Guas. Additionally, the circular shape of the church is divided into three altars. The most famous of them is the Chapel of St. Bernardino of Siena, where people can enjoy Goya's masterpiece depicting the scene of St. Bernardino's preaching.
