Introduction

Football fans gathered at the home ground of Sporting Lisbon, which is named after its founder. The stadium, which can hold 50,049 spectators, has a long history and has hosted several important matches during the European Cup, including the 2005 UEFA Cup final. The team was lucky to reach the final but unfortunately lost to Moscow's CSKA team. This stadium was newly built during the European Cup and officially opened in August 2003. The opening match invited Manchester United, and the result was 3-1, cutting down the Red Devils' grass. Cristiano Ronaldo was born in this match and, at the age of less than 18, won the attention of Ferguson, starting his professional football career. Sporting Lisbon's football school is the best in the world, having trained two world footballers before. The team is marked by green, and the mascot is a lion, with a giant lion statue erected at the entrance of the stadium.
