Introduction

The square was named after the Marquis of Pombal, who served as Prime Minister of Portugal from 1750 to 1777. At the center of the square is a huge column, built between 1917 and 1934, with a bronze statue of the Marquis of Pombal on top. Standing beside him is a lion, symbolizing power.
