Introduction

The Royal Garden is located on the northern ridge of the Prague Castle district, occupying 3.6 hectares and separated from the castle by the Jelení příkop. Its history dates back to 1534 when it was established by King Ferdinand I in a Renaissance style, but it has been gradually expanded over the centuries with additional elements. The east end of the garden features the beautiful Renaissance-style Queen Anne's Summer Palace, the Ball Game Hall and the Maximilian Statue, west of Dr. Eduard Beneš Villa. Its main purpose is to cultivate tree species from outside the central European region, such as chestnuts, maples, and hazels. The Royal Garden has played an important role in the history as a venue for private events of the royal family and other high-profile individuals, as well as a place for public visitation.
