Introduction

The Pieterskerk, initially a wooden church, was constructed on December 20, 1314, under the initiative of the Bishop of Utrecht. Following an increase in population and economic development in Leiden, the Gothic church was completed in 1391 (with the cloister section finished in 1415). Originally dedicated to the Catholic Saint Pancras, the church was later converted to accommodate Protestant worshippers. These days, the Pieterskerk is one of the most famous buildings in Leiden and attracts a large number of visitors.
