Introduction

Amsterdam's Red Light District is located between the canals of Oudezijds Voorburgwal and O.Z. Ahterburgwal in the old city area. It used to be a popular spot for sailors seeking entertainment and is filled with various symbols of a sexual nature. In recent years, the Dutch government has begun to clean up the area and convert the windows into museums or designer shops. The term "Red Light District" originated in the United States because prostitutes would place red lights in their windows to attract customers. There are two possible explanations for why "red light" has this particular meaning: one is based on the story of Rahab in the Bible, who was a prostitute in Jericho and helped Joshua's spies, marking her house with a red rope. The other explanation comes from railroad workers who carried red lanterns, which they would leave outside brothels when they visited. If you visit Amsterdam's Red Light District, you should be aware of your safety and belongings, and not just satisfy you
