Introduction

Market Square is the core square of the old town of Heidelberg, Germany. It is the oldest area of Heidelberg, named after the surrounding markets. On the north and south sides of the square are rows of houses, with the town hall (Rathaus) and the Church of the Holy Spirit (Heiliggeistkirche) on the east side. The Hercules Fountain, built between 1705 and 1709, is located in the center of the square and reflects the reconstruction efforts after the devastating War of the Grand Alliance. Market Square used to be a parking lot, but it has now become a pedestrian area. Every winter, Market Square hosts Christmas market activities.
