Introduction

This is the birthplace of the famous German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who was born here on August 28, 1794. Goethe spent his youth here and created his masterpieces "The Sorrows of Young Werther" and "Faust". Next to it is the Goethe Museum, which exhibits a large collection of art from the 18th and 19th centuries, including prints, paintings, and busts. These works vividly depict Goethe's relationship with art and artists such as Johann Heinrich Füssli, Caspar David Friedrich, and Frankfurt painters. Goethe's residence, built in the 17th century, was destroyed during World War II and rebuilt to its original state after the war. The interior showcases the artistic style of bourgeois housing in the late Baroque period. Goethe's study is on the second floor, maintaining the same appearance as when he was alive. The non-profit organization Freies Deutsches Hochstift is responsible for maintaining Goethe's residence, the Goethe Museum, and the poet's archive. Visitors can read important and valuable literary and printed materials here.
