Introduction

Austria's largest library, the National Library, has 7.4 million volumes, including papyrus, manuscripts, rare and precious books, maps, globes, music, portraits, charts, photographs, autographs, and posters, as well as works in Esperanto and other languages. These valuable collections are housed in a space adorned with gold-decorated marble supports. The National Library was established by the Habsburg dynasty and was originally located in the present-day Prunksaal, known as the Court Library (Hofbibliothek), until it was renamed in 1920.
