Merom Golan, A testament to history and strategic significance

Golan, Tiberias
Looking out over the abandoned cities of Syria
4.7

Introduction

The Golan Heights is located on the southwestern border of Syria, near the Jordan Valley, under Israeli military control. It is considered as a patriotic base for Israel and is often seen with Israeli soldiers, as well as UN forces stationed here. In warfare, one of the most brutal battlefields is the "Valley of Tears" in the eastern part of the Heights. It is a critical contested area for both Israel and Syria, with a "ghost town" known as Syria located about one kilometer away from the valley. This city was occupied by Israeli forces during the Middle East War and later destroyed when Israel withdrew in 1974. Today, the ruins of the city are preserved by Syria as a reminder of national shame for future generations.
